BACKGROUND

The first and only child of the high fae Seren, Cecilia Dubois is unique in this world for one very obvious reason - she is the only creature in her world to be born undead.

Seren, after all, is a lich. A magical zombie that can only be made when a high fae goes through the proper ritual, which involves dying and becoming reborn. He did this to escape from fae politics and forge his own life and gather his own power. There’s unique power in being able to bend the line between life and death, and he has a vested interest in both. He went into hiding with a new identity and life, and part of that life was marrying Willow Dubois, a young-half dryad. The two had only one child, with Willow dying in childbirth, but Cecilia was well-cared for.

And seemed, for all intents and purposes, entirely human.

She lived her life peacefully, marrying a man named Derek, and settling down to be as good to him as he could be. The one downside was Derek’s penchant for drinking and gambling, and the fact that drinking and losing made him angry. It made Cecilia angry, too, and it all came to the head a few months after her 28th birthday. Derek beat her to death.

Then she came back.

Her death severed her humanity from her body, and it made her true nature apparent. She had been born with the magic of a lich, but it had been kept under wraps by the humanity inherited from her mother. It stifled her magic, and losing it made her a singularly powerful being. She killed Derek in an act of revenge, drained him of his humanity, and was able to force herself back into a human form.

She decided, then and there, that she would not turn back to her lich side if she had the choice. It was not enough to make her human, though. Her first death and losing her original humanity was enough to completely sever it from her body, and her borrowed humanity couldn’t actually make her human. Her body could no longer age, or take any sort of damage. She became as immortal as her father and as the world advanced around her, she couldn’t hide anymore.

The technological revolution spurred on by dragons made it impossible to. The robotic creations made to find and fix corrupt magic could find Cecilia, as necromancy is corrupt by nature, and that’s when she met Rist. Rist was an android built for the express purpose of hunting beasts that had been corrupted by magic, and finding Cecilia confused them. She was corrupt, but she wasn’t, and Rist had no idea what to do with her.

They made a deal. Rist wouldn’t report her, as long as Cecilia promised to bring no harm to anyone. Cecilia, afraid of being seen as a monster, of being a monster, readily agreed.

PERSONALITY

Cecilia was shaped by her death, but mainly by how it’s lengthened her lifespan considerably. She’s had centuries to adapt to life, and that’s made her remarkably mellow and levelheaded. It takes a lot to throw her, and she’s forgiving to a fault.

Life moves on, after all. There’s no point in holding petty grudges.

The one thing that scares her is herself, because she knows she’s uniquely dangerous. She cannot die, she cannot be incapacitated, and she can use death magic freely. She’s an incredible threat, and all it takes is losing something that can be easily replaced. It would take no effort for her to be a major threat in the world, but she’s afraid of becoming a monster who only lusts for power. The capacity is there, and she knows it, but she does not want violence to beget more violence.

And so she tries to forgive and forget and be kind to everyone she meets. She’s friendly and chatty, and wants to help people in any way she can. If she runs fast enough from what she could be, nobody will be any wiser as to what secrets she holds.
